Mate's Story
Mate’s Gift began with Mate, a dog who truly changed lives. Born in 2014 in the remote village of Tangkahan, Sumatra, Mate was the only survivor of his litter. With proper care, he overcame early health challenges and became a beloved companion.
For years, Mate lived freely in his village, cared for by his family. But his adventurous spirit often led to health issues, requiring trips to the city for treatment. Finally, a difficult decision was made to bring him to Australia—a journey that spanned multiple countries, months of quarantine, and countless hurdles.
When Mate arrived home, his bond with his mum grew even stronger. He became her emotional rock during life’s toughest moments, offering unconditional love and companionship. Though he wasn’t fond of most dogs, he had a few special friends, and his unique personality shone through in everything he did.
In 2022, Mate developed glaucoma, and the difficult decision was made to let him go. His mum knew it was the kindest choice, as he had given so much of himself and seemed ready for his next chapter—a chance to help someone else in need, as he always had.
Mate’s Gift is his legacy, born from the love and inspiration he brought to his village and beyond. It’s not just about one dog or one person—it’s about community, compassion, and making a difference. Together, we honour Mate’s remarkable spirit by supporting animals in Southeast Asia and creating hope where it’s needed most.
